Stormwater Awareness Week 2022

Stormwater Awareness Week - September 26th - 30th, 2022

Polluted runoff is the top leading cause of water pollution in the United States so in honor of Stormwater Awareness Week 2022, we’ll be sharing five quick tips for reducing stormwater pollution.

1. Only Rain Down the Drain

You’ve more than likely heard this phrase before or seen it stamped above catch basins. Storm drains lead directly to local bodies of water like streams, creeks, and rivers so it is important that we are mindful of our actions and how they may impact pollution.

2. Avoid Harmful Chemicals

Some fertilizers and pesticides contain harmful chemicals that can negatively impact water quality when they are washed down the drain. Stear clear of these options and look for organic solutions instead.

3. Scoop Pet Waste

Have pets? Be sure to pick up after them! Pet waste is a major contributor to water pollution as it gets washed away with runoff.

4. Sweep Driveways and Sidewalks

Stormwater runoff from flat surfaces like driveways and sidewalks often picks up whatever is on these surfaces and carries it to the storm drains. Keep these areas clean by sweeping debris and other items off of them.

5. Wash Vehicles On Grass or Gravel

If you typically wash your vehicles at home, you may consider moving them onto a grass or gravel area (if available) prior to washing. Otherwise, dirt, grime, and other harmful pollutants that are washed off will find its way to the nearest storm drain.

NPDESPro allows users to design and send email campaigns with stormwater information just like these tips as part of its Public Education and Outreach module. Keep track of the efforts your MS4 is making to educate the public with automated reporting

That’s it! Those are our top 5 tips for reducing stormwater pollution. We’d love to know, do you practice these tips already? Let us know in the comments.
